2013 Land Rover Range Rover is Bigger and Much Lighter

Land Rover has taken the wraps off its completely redesigned 2013 Range Rover SUV.  An all-aluminum unibody as well as front and rear chassis structure brings the new Range Rover in at a much lighter weight. A full 700 lbs lighter on the U.S.-spec V-8 Range Rover.  That will translate into better gas mileage and more agile handling for the sport utility vehicle.

Key features include:

• Enhanced all-terrain performance with the introduction of a new fully automatic Land Rover "Terrain Response 2 Auto®" system

• A more spacious and luxurious interior provides a truly composed motoring experience for all occupants. Rear legroom increases 4.7 inches

• Lighter, stronger and more refined. The world's first SUV with an all-aluminum unibody structure

John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director, said: "The new Range Rover preserves the essential, unique character of the vehicle – that special blend of luxury, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability. However, its clean sheet design and revolutionary lightweight construction have enabled us to transform the experience for luxury vehicle customers, with a step change in comfort, refinement and handling."

Some say the new design looks a little too much like the Ford Flex.  What do you think?

The 2013 Land Rover Range Rover should begin arriving at dealerships in North America by December 2012.

Mini MINIs Are Used During Track & Field Events at London Olympics

In a very creative branding move by Olympic sponsor BMW, a small fleet of radio controlled MINI Coopers have been retrieving javelins, hammer, discus and shot during the London 2012 Olympics.  The "mini MINIs", as they are being called, will also put in time at the Paralympic games.

From the BMW press release:

This specially developed and designed radio controlled electric car will be used on the field of play in the Olympic Stadium to ferry javelins, discuses, hammers and shots back from the field to the throwing area, saving valuable time during competition.

Three Mini MINIs will be deployed for this crucial task and will be operated by Games Makers assigned and trained for this duty. The cars are roughly a quarter scale of the full-sized car and carry the athletic equipment situated inside, accessible through the adapted sunroof.

The battery powered cars can run for 35 minutes before needing to be recharged and they even have working headlights!

Here are a couple of videos showing the cars in action:
